#10: IPhone App for Parents and Children – Dragon Box

Learning advanced math doesn’t have to be boring or something you have to  learn until your teenage years.  At least not anymore.  I caught wind of this relatively new (at least to me) iPhone and iPad application called Dragon Box.  The name of this game sounds like it would be related to Pokemon or Magic the Gathering but let me assure it is not.  It is far from anything like that.

Dragon Box is a game that teaches children the basics of Algebra but not like we were taught in school.  Do remember staring at the chalkboard while the teacher tried to explain how to solve for X?  If you were like me you were bored to tears.  There was nothing fun about learning any type of math, especially Algebra.

This game is very engaging and makes you figure out problems (like math) using rules or instructions they provide you.  They don’t use numbers (at least not right away).  Instead they use cards with make believe animals on them.  The basics of the game teach you to try and get one box all by itself on one side (like solving for X).  My 8 year old daughter picked it up very quickly and made it through several levels.  She doesn’t see it as work but rather as a puzzle she must figure out using a set of rules.

My four year old son began playing the game after seeing my daughter so interested in it. He is about to finish the first level as I write this.  When he needs help I walk him through the problem and applaud him when he solves the problem correctly.

As for me, I actually wish I had this game when I was in high school.  I personally enjoyed math until it wasn’t fun to do anymore.  I had to relive math again when I was in college (which was not long ago) and I dreaded it.  If more games like this were to come about, I could see Dragon Box like games changing the way children learn math.

I am sure it won’t be long before my daughter finishes the game and I will be a proud dad when it happens.  How many 8 year olds learn the basics of Algebra?  I would dare to bet not many.  So I definitely recommend this game to families as it is a game the whole family can participate in.

Be sure to watch my review of the video.  Let me know what you think of the Dragon Box App on Facebook or by replying to this Article.

Thanks,
