#23: Second Opinion gives cause for Overprotective Parents to have Child Taken by CPS

To say I was shocked and confused when I read that a Sacramento couple had their 5 month old child taken from them by child protective services is an understatement.  Apparently local law enforcement forcibly took the child from his parents on the order of CPS.

The parents Alex and Anna Nikolayev took their 5 month old Sammy to Sutter Medical Center to be treated for what appeared to be flu like symptoms.    The problem apparently began when the parents became concern as to the treatment they were receiving from the medical center.

At one point the mother asked a nurse what they were giving her child.  The nurse indicated it was antibiotics.  The mother asked what the antibiotics were for and the nursed stated that she did not know.  Anna was concerned that the nurse had no idea why her child was even receiving the antibiotics.

Mother also indicated that later after speaking with the doctor, the doctor indicated her child should not have been on the antibiotics which caused further concern on behalf of the parents.

The parents of Sammy were not new to Sutter Medical Center and had been taking Sammy to a doctor there quite frequently for a heart murmur.

After Sammy had been treated for his flu like symptoms the medical center admitted Sammy to the ICU to keep an eye on his condition.  After a few days the doctors at the medical center began mention the possibility of their son needing heart surgery.

Feeling that staff at the medical center could not be trusted they wanted to get a second opinion of Sammy’s condition.  The parents took Sammy from the Sutter Medical Center straight to Kaiser Permanente without a proper discharge from Sutter Medical Center.

The local police showed up at Kaiser and determined the baby was fine.  Anna stated the police told her that Sutter Medical Center made it seem as if their baby was dying in their arms.

Baby taken coupleRecords from Kaiser indicated that Sammy was clinically safe to go home with his parents.  The doctor also indicated that he did not have a concern for the safety of the child at home with his parents.  After seeing the reports from the Kaiser doctors the police officers left.

The very next day child protective services and local law enforcement came to the family’s home. The husband was apparently tackled to the ground and his house keys were taken from him.  The mother set up a video camera to document what would take place after that.

The police officers entered their home and took Sammy from her mother’s arms.  Before taking Sammy the police officer could be heard in the video saying, “I’m going to grab your baby, and don’t resist, and don’t fight me ok?”.

Local news reports were unable to get a straight answer from CPS, local law enforcement or Sutter Medical Center.

While this story was being aired on the local news the mother and father were allowed to spend 1 hour with their child while he was in protective custody at Sutter Medical Center.

An Overprotective Parents Thoughts

I think what is most disturbing to me about the story is how the story doesn’t add up. There appears to be a bit missing from the story that might shed some light as to why CPS entered the picture and felt the need to take a child from their parents.

Furthermore if there isn’t supporting evidence that the child should have been taken then you can bet your behind that they are making up something to protect their actions.

I hope this wasn’t an act of a doctor that didn’t like the fact that the parents wanted a second opinion. According to reports the parents took Sammy straight from one facility to another which would make me believe that their intentions of a second opinion were sincere.

The big kicker is that CPS has such a bad track record it is very difficult to trust that they are doing the right thing.

I am all for protecting a child.  An there is nothing wrong for a parent asking why a certain treatment is being conducted on their child. Furthermore receiving an intelligent answer to their question is even more important. If you are going to put something in my child you better explain to me what it is and why you are doing it.

If Sutter and CPS is in the wrong on this one I hope some serious repercussions take place for all involved.

As a parent I don’t know what I would have done if someone, anyone tried to take my child from me.  This story just angers me.
