#4: 4 Must Have iPhone Apps for Parents

Smartphone and smartphone apps have taken the cell phone market by storm.   Mashable reports that over 1 million apps in the Apple App Store have been approved since the iPhone craze.  Many great, educational and entertaining applications have been developed for children and parents.  From time to time I will write about iPhone applications that have caught my eye or that I believe are worth sharing.  These apps are great for overprotective parents and parents who are interested in education apps for their children.  Below are 4 must have apps for parents.

Mad Libs iPhone ApplicationMad Libs

When I came across the Mad Libs application I thought of entertainment and education at the same time.  Everyone has likely played Mad Libs at one time or another as a child or an adult.  I thought this would be a great application for parents to play with their children on road trips.

The Mad Libs app provides one free book with 21 free stories for you to play Mad Libs.  After you complete the 21 free stories there are plenty more that can be purchased for $1.99.  Each book you purchase has 21 stories.  The Mad Libs app provides directions and tips in case you forgot what a noun or verb was. It’s a great app for parents and kids.

Find My Friends – More Great Apps for ParentsFind my friends app

The find my friends application is an iPhone tracking application.  I installed this application on my wife’s phone and my phone.  My wife is able to find my location by opening the application and clicking on my name.  Once she has done so the application locates my phone and shows my location (assuming my phone is with me) on an aerial map.  I travel quite a bit for my job so in case my wife couldn’t get a hold of me for some reason I wanted her to have the capability to locate me in case something was wrong.

If your children have a smart phones this application can give you some piece of mind as to the location of your child.  If your teen says he is at the mall, then check the application to see where their phone is.  Worried because you can’t reach your teen on the phone?  Check the application to see where they are.

This application can bring peace of mind to a parent or a spouse to know that their loved ones are ok.  This is an ideal application for overprotective parents.  This application is free.  For more information on this application, click on the picture.

Netflix appNetflix

I am sure you have heard of Netflix by now.  They offer DVDs to be delivered to your home or make movies available  to stream live to your television.  Netflix is also available on your iPhone and you don’t need an internet connection to watch movies.  In most areas the 3G network (cellular network) is enough to play the movie.

If you are on a road trip and your kids need something to do, start a movie on your phone for them.  Please note that data charges will apply when streaming a video on the cellular network. I have unlimited data on the Verizon Wireless network so this isn’t something I have to worry about.

Google Maps ApplicationGoogle Maps

Google Maps is relatively new to the iPhone world but not the Android world.  Google maps is a GPS application that allows you to enter your destination address and be voice guided until you arrive at our location.  On of the best apps for parents or anyone for that matter.

This user friendly map on your phone shows you where you are and the path you need to follow.  The application saves your past destination so you don’t have to retype an address you go to frequently.  Another great feature of the Google Maps is that the voice prompt will interrupt any music or podcast playing on your iPhone.  After the voice prompt finishes your podcast or music resumes.  This is a must have app for any smart phone.  The application is free

I hope these applications help you in your parenting duties.
