#26: Club Awesome with my Family – We had an Awesome Time

The past few weeks have been a blast with my family and it really started with a Christian concert that took place in the area.  My family and I listen to a Christian radio station called Air1 and basically have the station on anytime we get in the car and go anywhere.  The music is fun and uplifting and we all sing the songs from time to time while heading to our destination.  So needless to say we love it and are huge fans of the station.  On a side note, I actually found this radio station after buying a car.  The car was pre-owned and the radio station was programmed in the radio.  I am very thankful for the station, but not fond of the car payments. I digress.

Club Awesome on the Radio

Well on Fridays the DJ Brant Hansen does this fun bit in the afternoons where everyone helps create a club called Club Awesome. Each Friday this imaginary club is created by the host and the listeners. People call in to the station and tell the host the interesting and fun things they want in the club.  This fictitious club is only limited to the imaginations of those calling in.  Callers make up things like snow on the dance floor or a snow cone stand for those who feel like a snow cone while they are dancing.  Adults and children call in from all over to contribute to this club each week.

The Tour

I guess at one point the DJ Brant Hansen decided to bring Club Awesome to selected cities.  Brant brought together several big name Christian bands and would throw free concerts across numerous cities and states.  This year Club Awesome was coming to the Tacoma, Washington area and I was very excited.  The Club Awesome tour started in southern California, made its way up to northern California, then onto Portland, Oregon and finally Tacoma, Washington.

Air1 posterWe Went to Club Awesome – Good Family Time

We go to the church where the concert was being held and the line to get into the church was so long that we thought we might not get in.  Apparently arriving 30 minutes early isn’t enough when attending a Club Awesome concert. We missed the 5 different cheese nacho bar and Brant Hansen’s stamp collection but we did make it in time to make a commemorative plate (drawing on a paper plate) which both kids participated in.  The line was so long we thought we might not make it in because we didn’t think the church could hold the amount of people waiting to get in.

The line started moving pretty quickly and  as my family and I made our way into the church and the high fives commenced from the staff members and the even the band members from 7eventh Time Down who were waiting at the door to hand out high fives.  My kids were experiencing something very cool and new to them.  Even I hadn’t been to a Christian concern in 20 years (the last one I went to was a Michael W. Smith concert).  We made ourClub Awesome way in and had a view from the right side which wasn’t the greatest but it didn’t matter.

My daughter quickly realized that she wasn’t tall enough to see over everyone so I put her on my shoulders and my son made his way onto my wife’s shoulders.  Brant Hansen made his way on stage and said a few words and then Shine Bright Baby came on stage and started rocking the place.  My daughter was so in to the music and the scene as she clapped and sang along to the music.

After Shine Bright Baby, 7eventh Time Down made their way on stage and played their hearts out.  I think one of the funniest things about the concert was we knew the songs.  My kids realized that the bands were the makers of the music that they sang along to in the car which made the whole event that much more fun.

Finally the big band Manafest made it to the stage and it seemed as if every one of their songs they played had been a big hit at one point because we had heard all of them on the radio.  Most bands typically have one or two hits and the rest are just ok.  Manafest wasn’t one of those bands.

daddy daughterOne of the great things about Club Awesome is that the age range of the participants was vast; I saw small children that were probably about 4 years old up to men and women in the 50’s, and I thought that was pretty interesting.  Even though the place was packed I was never worried that things would get out of hand.

Just Reflecting

Not too get to sentimental about the whole event but I felt happy and blessed to be at this thing called Club Awesome with my wife and children.  I hope to go to many more Christian concerts with my family.

I am a blessed man and I want to be the dad, parent and husband who is the leader of my household.  That is what I will strive for. I want to protect my wife’s heart and my children’s hearts.  I don’t know if that makes any sense to you but it makes sense to me.

See you next time,

Andrew, an overprotective parent
